چکیده

This article discusses some of the key themes on wildfires in forests and their effects fauna that I explored 2020 Krebs lecture at University Canberra. The examined my personal perspectives such topics as (1) climate change fire, (2) role hazard reduction burning mitigating house loss from wildfires, (3) how logging can elevate risks high-severity wildfire, (4) ways which structure age a forest time it is burnt has marked impacts post-fire recovery, (5) ecological damage caused by (salvage) logging, (6) aspects species recovery. Perspectives these are informed largely long-term work wet Victoria coastal woodlands Jervis Bay Territory neighbouring southern New South Wales. Some policy land management responses to outlined, including urgent need tackle change, better targeting close human infrastructure, removal conventional native forests, substantial expansion old growth estate, establishment dedicated monitoring gather empirical data needed quantify wildfires.

Presettlement forests and fire in southern Alabama

Although the loss of Pinus palustris P. Mill. (longleaf pine) dominated communities and the alteration of the presettlement fire regimes have been documented, there is little information on the ecology of the presettlement lower Coastal Plain forests of the southeastern United States. We used 12 637 witness trees, which were recorded by General Land Office surveyors between 1820 and 1846, to id...

Andrew Z. Fire - Nobel Lecture

I would like to thank the Nobel Assembly of the Karolinska Institutet for the opportunity to describe some recent work on RNA-triggered gene silencing. First a few disclaimers, however. Telling the full story of gene silencing would be a mammoth enterprise that would take me many years to write and would take you well into the night to read. So we’ll need to abbreviate the story more than a lit...

The fire frequency-severity relationship and the legacy of fire suppression in California forests

Fire is one of the most important natural disturbance processes in the western United States and ecosystems differ markedly with respect to their ecological and evolutionary relationships with fire. Reference fire regimes in forested ecosystems can be categorized along a gradient ranging from ‘‘fuellimited’’ to ‘‘climate-limited’’ where the former types are often characterized by frequent, lowe...

Post-Fire Management of Cork Oak Forests

Cork oak ( Quercus suber L.) forests are def ned here as the range of habitats from open savanna-like woodland formations to dense forests. According to the European forest type’s nomenclature (EEA 2007 ) these ecosystems are included in the ‘broadleaved evergreen forest’ class and in the ‘Mediterranean e vergreen oak forest’ type. This forest type is dominated by the e vergreen sclerophyllous ...

The Carbon Conundrum — Fire and Fuel Management in Fire-prone Forests

Natural resource managers face a conundrum: when do fire management activities increase sources or sinks of greenhouse gases? This extension note describes forest carbon (C) dynamics and approaches for dealing with carbon stocks and flows while managing for fire and a full range of natural resource values. In addressing climate change, we need to understand the relationships between fire manage...
